The former requires a different expectation on the part of both faculty and students, but it is achievable and allows for the kind of unstructured exploration that often produces the greatest learning. I teach several tech courses as electives as well as online courses. The need for computer courses on the high school level varies. Some students have the skills and some do not. I do think that there is a need to prepare our students for college and careers where technology is essential and used on a daily basis. Certainly, students know how to use word processing and the Internet. They are proficient on downloading images from their cameras and participating in social networking sites. They are even experts on downloading music and playing games. But if they are looking at jobs in Business, Finance, Communications, Engineering, or Fine/Graphic Arts, they will need more than these skills. They will need to be educated on how to create Excel spreadsheets to calculate formulas and import data to analyze numbers. They will need to know how to create a presentation that highlights their topic without putting their audience to sleep. They will need to know programs like Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate images. They will need to be able to handle programming logic using code like HTML and JAVA and Flash. They will need to be able to use software programs like CAD to create animations and 3-D displays. Other important skills include being able to evaluate websites for valid information to use as a resource on their papers and how to cite their references to abide by copyright laws. Unless teachers are willing to integrate and teach these skills within their current curriculums, technology courses that highlight these areas are essential for the 21st Century student on the high school level.Dianne Pappafotopouloshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11072486716857716315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-76006526385910822152009-12-08T00:53:45.256-08:002009-12-08T00:53:45.256-08:00I decided to go back and re-read this post... not...I decided to go back and re-read this post... not because I'm enamored with your writing style (who wouldn't be) but to remind myself what I want to see in my staff and HR's recommendations for pay increases.

Hope I haven't seen the last of the great writing here.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07565946606411964165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-8638105814964418922009-08-28T08:59:56.087-07:002009-08-28T08:59:56.087-07:00Secrets of Consulting is my number one recommended...Secrets of Consulting is my number one recommended book of all time. I don't know which is the cause and which is the effect, but I know if I see Access, I'm likely to see really bad DB design practices being rewarded in that class.

I suspect that MS Access is used heavily in programs where there is a lack of academic background in professional data management.

When I see more professional DBMS's used, I see a greater separation of DB topics from development topics, better data quality practices being recognized, and more complex database topics being addressed. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the DB course has more time to focus on non-coding topics.

So as a single indicator, I don't care as much what tools a program uses for education; what I do care about is that the students are actually getting a data-focused education in data-related courses. I just don't see that as often in programs that rely solely on MS Access for their academic needs.Karen Lopez https://www.blogger.com/profile/08744312127015606524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-90296190589557705022009-05-19T01:32:00.000-07:002009-05-19T01:32:00.000-07:00I caught this from your tweets and it was a great ...I caught this from your tweets and it was a great watch...

ready to start a Reading Ninja supply shop?hula bettyhttp://www.hulabetty.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-18081274809291226052009-05-15T21:33:00.000-07:002009-05-15T21:33:00.000-07:00so I've thought about this... ITT Tech Institute now runs ads telling everyone the path to a good career is in project management. Of course now the market is flooded with paper lions who wave their PMM certs and take jobs from more capable practitioners for a 1/3 less in salary...

Ok so maybe that is not the way to lift Data Management above the roll of geeky theory spouted by old analysts around the table over a stout...

Maybe just figuring out how to make data management execution oriented with practical delivery to the bottom line will allow the theory and intellectual growth to ignite and consume those who can see past today's limitations.

Or not.Hula Bettyhttp://www.hulabetty.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-12315959265279414002009-04-27T13:23:00.000-07:002009-04-27T13:23:00.000-07:00Bonnie,

I think that is a huge mistake. We should be developing professionals along the same rows to span multiple columns. So we shouldn't be looking for the non-existent "Data Professional" who can and want to work only with data, from strategic planning to performance tuning scripts and schemas.

I don't believe that people are naturally drawn to work up and down a single column, but are normally draw to tasks that span columns and focus on a few rows (Plan versus Architect versus Build or Maintain).

Great post.Karen Lopez https://www.blogger.com/profile/08744312127015606524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-73921278436337740152009-04-27T10:24:00.000-07:002009-04-27T10:24:00.000-07:00Excellent discussion about the need to attract and...Excellent discussion about the need to attract and develop "newbies" to the field of data management. I really like the point about giving them the fundamentals to move into the profession later even if they don't go there right away.

I think we also need to do a better job of marketing the profession to the business to drive up the demand for more data professionals. I don't think that most businesses understand the value of their data and therefore the need for data professionals especially when they are out buying and implementing ERP's. If we can get more people saying "we really need a data architect" rather than saying "who's that?" "what do they do for us?" we can really help get more people thinking about it as a career.Rob Drysdalehttp://www.infoadvisors.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049864865671054329.post-33219483200440443782009-04-27T09:35:00.000-07:002009-04-27T09:35:00.000-07:00What's your twitter handle? We could just as easily use the $1 billion to fund slots at existing schools. Why shouldn't we pay for it? Why shouldn't Kitsap county pay for the university they want?

As for how it would work, I don't know what Hobbs has in mind, but maybe it wouldn't be a state school, it would be ours. Through it all I watched history repeat itself.

In many cases prior to the tech corrections, companies hired guys (gender neutral non-specific use) just because they had empty cubes and needed the dudes. Guys who previously sold $300 eye wear at the Sunglass Hut all of a sudden pitched themselves as computer analysts, web developers, project managers or architect of viral media technology.

Why then is everyone surprised when bad business models result in layoffs across the board culling tech sector posers who too often believe their own press. Sure in the short run the baby, bath water, and even the tub get thrown out, but over the turmoil of last 20 years, the good ones, who consider Tech their craft to be mastered, have landed on their feet. And will again.

This blip will pass. There will be a need for more tech guys than ever before. The ones who work their craft, continually learn and put in their time in the trenches will find tech to at least be recession resistant.

To succeed in tech you must continually learn new technology, improve your analytical skills, strengthen business acumen and build a broad social network. It won't stop a fall but in the lean times, these skill will soften the landing.

Or... I hear circus geeks are the recession proof.
